Lets be clear here -- swamp dunkeys and others are right thinking that socialism is best for them -- they would have to get up from couch and actually EARN a living under different system, so you can't say they are stupid to vote Labour.

Its not generally a problem unless party that grabs power starts making sure that a lot more people depend on this "socialism", thus building power base that will vote all the time for them because anything else will be a disaster.

Such a nightmare society is not self sustaining and would eventually collapse. Not before most of us have kicked the bucket unfortunately.

It would be nice also if the general assumption that laziness was confined to swamp donkeys and others among the "lower orders" was true. Unfortunately, the work ethic is largely dead or dying among all sections of society. I have little doubt that the Indians will eventually walk all over us.

It certainly will collapse, just like every unsustainable pyramid does.

But what this is in comparison with being 4-8 extra years in power? Just imagine how long NL politicians waited for it!

Civil liberties may have to be "eroded" to protect Britons from terrorism, the head of security service MI5 has said.
Yes, and I think that we should have some of our bank balance "eroded" to protect us from terrorism. And perhaps we should have some of our holidays "eroded" to protect us from terrorism. And I think that we should have some of our free time in the evening "eroded" to protect us from terrorism. And we should have some our our coastline "eroded" to protect us from terrorism. And we should have some of the internet "eroded" to protect us from terrorism. And we should have the Houses of Parliament "eroded" to protect us from terrorism. And we should have our food supply "eroded" to protect us from terrorism. And our freedom to use "isms" should be "eroded" to protect us from terror. And finally our rights to "t" must be "eroded", leaving us in no doubt, that our right to breathe was really in "error".

Lack of written Constitution is not helping.

              Agree with that entirely AtW*1

In theory anyhow. Without properly defined boundaries on government there is no safegaurd against creeping tyranny. Unfortunately, I suspect that the aspiring tyrant will always find ways of modifying any written constitution to suit - witness the numerous "ammendments" in the US *2, land of the free, where permanent imprisonment without civil (read any) trial is now possible.

Neither is your idea of an armed populace any good. Shotguns against the tanks and grenades of a professional state army??? Are there any real solutions? Buggered if I can think of any.

If there was a written constitution that could be enforced then it should stipulate that at regular intervals (Sub section IIVVV para a - Not less than every 6 months) senior politicians be hanged upside down from lamposts and disembowelled so all their entrails go up their noses - that would teach the bastards some democracy.

*1 I have even used proper capitalisation of your name in appreciation but don't get used to it.
*2 I learned this from watching the Simpsons.

Its much harder for a tyrant to get to power when population is armed with serious guns -- I would have voted NL if they brought back handguns.

I think the likelihood of a popular uprising in the UK (armed or otherwise) is sheer fantasy. Most people can't think beyond where the next disability benefit or tax credit is coming from.

What do you mean, brought them back? Were they commonplace over here once?

Well, if it weren't for those cheese eating surrender monkeys, the Dutch and the French, then we would have probably had one by now, and could be safe in the knowledge that the EU was on our side, rather than Messr's Blair.
