Of course they are, nothing else can explain what they are doing - this is a deliberate strategy not just to let the young get infected, but to do it as quickly and as comprehensively as possible. If they get away with it (and they might), Boris will declare himself a genius. If not, it will be our fault.

"Sage adviser claims ministers trying to get as many as possible infected with Covid

Exclusive: Prof Robert West says rhetoric about caution is ‘a way of putting blame on public’

A scientist advising the government has accused ministers of allowing infections to rip through the younger population in an effort to bolster levels of immunity before the NHS faces winter pressures.

“What we are seeing is a decision by the government to get as many people infected as possible, as quickly as possible, while using rhetoric about caution as a way of putting the blame on the public for the consequences,” said Prof Robert West, a health psychologist at University College London who participates in Sage’s behavioural science subgroup.

“It looks like the government judges that the damage to health and healthcare services will be worth the political capital it will gain from this approach,” West said, adding that ministers appear to believe the strategy is now sustainable – unlike last year – because of the vaccine rollout.

The more you let the virus "roam" the higher the chances of it mutating. Let it spread in a vaccinated group of people and sooner or later it will mutate to evade the vaccine so that it can survive. So the whole "herd immunity" approach is dumber than anything else, especially with cases soaring as it means you need to reach 98% vaccination levels to stop the spread (the higher the R the higher the % or vaccinated people).

you can still get it and also get the mutant version from a different part of the word, if it doesn't mutate here it doesn't mean it won't mutate somewhere else.

    Which won't happen.

Oh and one of Keir Starmer's children has Covid.

So now the PM and the Leader of the opposition have both got to self-isolate....

I might be wrong about this but we might not be through the pandemic just yet and the worse is yet to come.
It might sound like a bit of a doom but we shall consider all possibilities.

The challenging part would be: vaccines are losing efficiency over time and people vaxed first during first wave with AZ or even the others are starting to be vulnerable again. We have more resilient strains that spread quicker. Delta being the first of it.

The response of the gov doesn't make any sense, unless it is a mitigation for something bigger going on that they are trying to hedge against.

Social unrest I think is a bit factor also, we have rising inequality during the pandemic (that was already and high levels before it).
Revolts and social unrest is probably not an outcome they would want to have in a jurisdiction that prides itself with stability. Let's not forget the breadwinner here is 'The City'...

So I think they might be letting the virus run wild so that it scares the people and also justifies more extreme measures when economic consequences of businesses panicking come though. ( stability has been sustained by confidence in vaccines, working towards the light at the end of the tunnel, we had freedom day now, if those things change we might not have financial stability for long)

this appeared yesterday in my youtube feed, sounds a bit extreme but might have some truth in it.

I don't see many people agreeing it's rubbing? The infection rates are rubbish. The methods of handling are the best we can do.
So you think if one person in your office gets Covid, everyone on the floor of the building they work should have to isolate? That's basically the school model.

I know rather a lot of teachers and they all think it's rubbish. They get told to isolate when someone they haven't even been in the same room as gets it, children who barely have any contact with each other have to, etc.

These are NOT the best methods, which is why the government has ditched them.
