"Dear Katie,
I am writing on behalf of my sister, who has been a victim of financial abuse at the hands of her boyfriend. She met this man in May 2017 and he moved into her flat in early 2018. He seemed like a nice, genuine guy and we were happy for her. But then one day my sister received a message from one of his ex-girlfriends, warning her to “watch out”. She claimed to have been financially and emotionally abused by him. My sister ignored the message after her boyfriend’s insistence that this woman was “crazy”.
In the summer of that year he started taking money from my sister. He had fingerprint access to her iPhone and used this feature to transfer himself £5,000. When my father found out he had taken money from her and gambled it away he paid for private therapy for him. Eventually he paid my sister back £1,200. This was just enough to gain her trust again and show he was on a good path.
During 2019 my sister’s boyfriend quit his job and started his own company. He spent a lot of time at home during the day and convinced her to let him “take care” of certain things, such as bills and their finances. My sister has never felt confident at managing her own money, but she had a small inheritance and a steady income. She always had a comfortable cushion in the bank."
