Whatever the failings of the NHS are, privatisation is not the remedy.

There are actually three options unlike the two normally presented when we discuss NHS non performance.

1. Put up with poor performance because we are so lucky to have the NHS. We should not question its performance because you have no right to do so.
2. Privatise it like America so all the poor people die horrible deaths on the sidewalk


3. Run the NHS efficiently so we are better served than every other health service in the world.


Most people want option 3.

I've always assumed that when you visit a doctors surgery or a hospital, you'll come out with something you didn't go in with. Although a couple of years ago a chap I knew locally went into hospital for a minor operation, contracted sepsis, and came out in a box. He was younger than me.

Most people want option 3.

Some international comparisons of multiple countries' healthcare systems have previously identified that the NHS is one of the best performing health services, given the level of spending. Current spending as a percentage of GDP is below most other high income countries and we have fewer doctors and nurses per capita too.

My view is the NHS works fairly well most of the time but when it's under pressure, it struggles. Myself and extended family have had some amazingly good experiences with the NHS over the years and some absolutely dire ones too. That is what is hard to reconcile under supposedly one service.
