Its not clear to me what what the sex workers are fighting for. Sex laws in the UK are very liberal. A woman can legally work from home, or a hotel room by herself. Not bad for safety, although Brothels are illegal. In fact the sex laws in the UK are much more liberal than the US, and many parts of Europe.

What do the women want? The right to work from a Brothel? But then, who wants a brothel on their street? Thats the problem, nobody wants a brothel on their street. Which is why sex work does not take place in legal brothels here. Would you want a brothel on your street?

I don't have an issue with a well run brothel on the local trading estate.

50 years ago my Mum used to live on one side (just outside) of Soho and worked in a lab doing research for a household name (Before the idiots get confused) on the other side (just outside) of Soho her commute was a bus ride then a walk through the last part of Soho. She used to get some punters giving her stress until the Doormen on the various strip clubs stepped in and explained what would happen if my Mother was ever approached in an an inappropriate way (they didn't need the stress of the Police getting involved), she walked through safely with the Doorman saying 'Good evening Mrs V senior' to her.

Well regulated sex work can appear to be quite civilised. Though this was before we imported some of the worst criminals in the world.

Apologies; you are, of course, correct. The power imbalance inherent in the exploitation of people for sex is exhibited across sexes... but, it should be pointed out that it is generally still the case that it is the male of the species that is procuring this "service" and perpetuating the exploitation of those less able.

One would argue that sending the wife into the local factory production line for 9 hours a day, for barely more than the minimum wage, is exploitation.

The sex workers are exploiting the fat wallets of the gullible men, not the other way round.

I'm really torn on this one. There is rife exploitation in the sex industry that I'd hope legalisation would help sort out. On the other hand, there also many people who are very happy with their chosen vocation and who don't want/need protections (sound familiar?). It's how to make it work for the whole spectrum of sex worker that's most important.

Did I say that?

No. I said that they were exploited. And, in my third-hand experience, very damaged by the work that they have to undertake in order to survive/get by. Your experience may be different -- good for you if that's so -- but your experience does not detract from the fact that the majority of sex work is undertaken by those least able to take care of themselves via any other means.

Sex work is not work; it is the exploitation of women for the gratification of men.

And yes, "sending^* one's wife into a local factory production line for 9 hours a day, for barely minimum wage" could be seen as exploitation if the partner is not also contributing to the domestic pot.
