Supress, divide and conquer. Pubs were useful gathering places for people with radical and revolutionary ideas so they started shutting them down through high prices and bans on things that are bad for you. But everyone got fat and they're struggling again now.

Average house price? Average mortgage for those houses?

If you pair an average wage with an average house price, there's a considerable difference. 20 years ago it was about 1/3, now it's 1/10.

20 years ago was just after one of the deepest postwar recessions. In the 1980's house prices were 8 times my salary in the South-East and interest rates were higher.
