That's because they are not citizens of those countries, but they are British citizens.Originally posted by d000hg View PostSo will all the affairs in the country they've moved to, but they don't get to vote there.Comment

Why are, in the main, white people called expats yet someone with a slightly darker skin is called a migrant?“Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.”Comment

As to the thread topic, there has to be a cutoff at some point, it seems far too long at 15 years, 5 would make more sense. People who don't live here and have made a permanent home elsewhere shouldn't have a vote as they're going to escape any consequences of the way their vote is cast, that's hardly democratic.Comment

Brexit make not one jot of difference to my life, since I'm already a permanent resident abroad, independent of Britain's membership of the EU. As I'm in my fifteenth year of the glorious migrant/immigrant/expat life style
I will be voting, and I plan to vote to remain - because I'm quite fond of dear old Blighty, and think, notwithstanding all the rhetoric, that Britain will do better in than out.
As far as continuing to be franchised - I'm really not that bothered. General elections have certainly become less relevant, though watched with great disinterest. The only way I keep up with British politics is my subscription to Private Eye. Interestingly, I noticed that the Electoral Role office of my constituency have been keener than usual that I'm able to exercise my vote. I also get ads about it on my Facebook stream. I wonder if Dave is worried?Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!Comment

Why there should be any cut off? All citizens over age of X should have basic right to vote, that's democracy.Originally posted by TykeMerc View PostAs to the thread topic, there has to be a cutoff at some point, it seems far too long at 15 years, 5 would make more sense.
It's completely undemocratic to prevent them from voting - even UK prisoners won right to vote.Comment

One of the interesting aspects of polling is that older folk are more likely to vote Leave but they won't have to live with the consequences. But that's democracy for you!Originally posted by AtW View PostWhy there should be any cut off? All citizens over age of X should have basic right to vote, that's democracy.

Putin doesn't have to worry about the actual votes cast in elections. Somehow it all works outOriginally posted by AtW View PostIt's outrageous that Govt can prevent British citizen from taking part in voting just because they live abroad (probably because of those Govts in the first place!).
Not even Putin tried that.

Does not matter - taking right to vote from citizen is an outrage!
