I remember a few years ago half of Portsmouth confused 'paediatrician' with 'paedophile' and all but lynched a female doctor.

When a journalist explained to one of the mob that paediatrician means children’s doctor, the bloke replied: "yeah, but she's still a pedo".

I love going to the desks of elderly master gardeners ready to answer your questions at garden centers during the growing season. I like to ask them, “How do you pronounce c, l, e, m, a, t, i, s?” If they pronounce it the non Greek way, I then ask them, “How do you pronounce c, l, i, t, o, r, i, s?” I am usually sent packing

Urban Myth with some truth in the roots but it was St Brides, not Portsmouth or Bristol as widely exaggerated on Mumsnet etc....
