a)He didn't just make a statement, he implied that anytime an isolated incident happens to him it's a new trend

b)He does this virtually anytime something happens to him. If an agent doesn't call him back it's "have you noticed agents don't call back these days", if he sees slow-driving cars he regales us about the "rise of the slow-driving commuter"

c)None of the things he highlights are news

Could be for any number of reasons, here are two:

Client wants someone to work longer hours, which if you have a long travel distance / time is not an option.

Client got burnt with someone starting and then leaving after a couple of weeks because they couldn't handle the travel, and so want to only look at local people in future.

I live in Birmingham and Commute to London, am always in the office between 8.30 and 9 (having already been to the gym on some days), some of my London based colleagues rock in between 9.30 to 10 am including one who lives 2 miles away from the office!

I was at client's offices recently. I overheard them discussing a candidate who'd applied for something - the thought being that because he lived far away he'd expect more money. Which is probably true.
