Lack of jobs advertised - a theory

Just a theory, but after job searching the usual places today it's like a barren wasteland out there.

My theory is that there are jobs, but they aren't being advertised and that the agents are using the candidates they have on record to check first rather than advertise and have 900 more applicants swamp them?

unfortunately chris I think you are right.

have you tried networking with all previous companies you have had roles at, or agents who placed you there, or people you have worked with in the past so that a) you are not forgotten b) if they know of where there are roles you could go for?

      Good Luck

Yep, only been contracting 3 years so not much to go on.. but pretty much resigned now to a bit of bench time whilst things sort themselves out. Maybe you'll see me at your local mcdonnalds drive-thru this time next year if things get any worse!

Yeah I've seen those jobs advertised. Shame I'm not an expert in French, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Latin and Romanian.. I guess those jobs will go to the 3 people on the planet who are.

Chris were we separated at birth? That and actually pretty much everything else you've said is what I currently mutter when finding these roles on Jobslave.

Perfect job in Geneva/Brussels/Den Haag - 'Must be fluent in 5 different languages and have ~3 yrs experience in uprooting trees'.

                Permietractor (probably)

If you're on the bench, why not spend your time learning french or german? Trust me - if I can do it, anyone can!

Not entirely true. Many jobs in central Europe are advertised as "english environment". Even where I am (where German is essential) are a number of people who cannot or will not speak German (or indeed where Germans like to show how well they can speak english).

Don't let the language put you off. APPLY, APPLY, APPLY!! What else have you got to lose?
