Scot Gov contract offer - but American Passport...

    Hi all,

I'm hoping someone here may have some insight into what the likely outcome here is, my brain can't handle much more anxious waiting!

The situation: I have been offered an 11 month (likely to be 11 months plus 1 year extension) contractor position with the Scottish Gov, through an interim framework call off via an agency (I'll be employed by an umbrella company).

I've sent all my RTW docs & references over to the agency today and they will begin to apply for my clearance... so I can't yet give notice at my current employer (where I really am quite desperate to move on).

What has now arisen as an uncertainty is that, I have an American passport.

My status in the UK is Indefinite Leave to Remain, so I have never encountered an issue before as I have no restrictions on my right to work (I have been in the UK since 2007, ILR since 2011). But as I'm not EEA ILR, everything I've read is now suggesting that this is going to go wrong.

Does anyone know if this is likely to fall through because of Civil Service nationality rules? Or if it is likely to be ok as I'm just a contractor and not directly employed? The Agency is unsure as well, and has just advised to wait and see (my anxiety says "i'drathernotthanks"!).

There's nothing spooky that will come back from my security clearance so I'm not worried about that at least!

Any and all help or advice appreciated, even if it is a definite "yup, you're buggered", because then at least I can continue my search in good faith!

(and yes, I do need to apply for my citizenship, its actual sheer laziness that I haven't done this yet, I know!)

    Thanks!

if you have right to work then the US passport would only be a problem for other clearances.
Some clearances require UK nationality, most don't.
As an ally I would think that US nationality is fine for most scenarios, excluding defense and nuclear. And both defense and nuclear have other routes for allied countries.
More important for clearance is a permanent place of residence in the UK. Which I presume you already have.

Just apply and see what happens as we cannot say for sure where clearance is involved.
    See You Next Tuesday

      Thanks so much.

I know there's so many what-ifs, I appreciate the reply!

I'm sure its one I'm just going to have to chill out and wait and see.
Was just hoping someone might've been in the same boat with a civil service contract at some point in their life!

I've been perm for last 6 years so I'm very out the loop at the moment!
