    LinkedIn and Recruiters

For those that don't use LinkedIn and/or those that ignore connect requests from recruiters, one thing that I have found is that as long as you set your privacy options so that only you can view your details, connecting with recruiters is a valuable source of new opportunities. Why? Because recruiters will generally 'like' posts from other recruiters in their network who are advertising new roles. Those likes appear on your LinkedIn front page which you are able to respond to. There are three new roles today that are not currently showing on the jobboards!
The privacy setting means that only you can see your contacts so recruiters can't connect and harvest.
"Hope your doing fine". My favourite opening line in emails from certain agencies! Not only the fact they can't spell, but who actually says that?

Some of the recruiters are just putting up fake roles on linkedin to harvest CV's, so not much difference to jobs boards.

The main thing I find hilarious on linkedin is the blatant lies on many career histories, and people are no doubt hired on the basis of this nonsense, indeed many very senior people have obvious (to me because I have worked with them) lies on their profile and seem to be getting away with it.

As ever the recruitment business is just like the wild west.

People do the same thing or even worse on their CVs so it's no different to how things have been for donkeys years

If an agent is any good they won't advertise real jobs on a job board or Linkedin.
Instead they will directly contact candidates who they know and fill the role that way. The more specialised the role, the more an agent would go to their contact list. When I see a specialised role advertised it either means the agent doesn't know what they are doing or they are trying to put a marker down for contractors (and other agencies) to say that they deal in a particular area and their business is going very well.

If the agent is just a CV distribution company - i.e. they add little to no value, then they'll advertise, get a load of CVs in, not speak to any candidates or put better ones forward, and send generic emails when the client says no.
…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore

Possibly, but here some examples of posts which I can choose to ignore or reply to:

              A twist on ‘Recruiter’

I’ve just had a ‘Recruiter’ “I’m a Headhunter...” attempt to lure me out with a Head of Strategy role.

A little bit of digging around his company brings up ‘career coaching’.

So straight into the bin with that one.

                You forgot to mention :-

                - executives telling life affirming stories of how a down and out asked for money for a coffee; taking them to a Starbucks, found out they used to work in the same industry but fell on hard times. Ringing friends found that guy a job so hey everyone be nice to each other!

                - recruiters complaining about horrible contractors posting tales of bad experiences. Yes, there are bad recruiters but we're not all like that, we do a great service for everybody it's not about the money.

                - life affirming bulltulip from people pretending to be nice when you know that if you ever spoke to them for more than 5 minutes you'd stab them in the eyes with a biro, whilst vomiting at the sugar overload.

My wish list for linkedin functiionality includes an ability to set different access band levels for different contacts, so your best mates and trusted buddies can interact more than people you have simply worked with, and they can interact more than agents who you hardly know who simply want to try and lift your contact list.
