The good news is that we will no longer be paying the EU tariff on imported wine from New Zealand. That will save us about £0.20 per bottle. (Current tariff is €32 per 100 litres)
This is possibly going to be dropped in the next couple of years for the EU due to negotiations on the EU-NZ FTA, which started last month.

The bad news is that until the UK negotiate a deal with NZ, then the WTO tariff on imported wine is... £0.20 per bottle (approx). The WTO rate is identical to the EU rate.

    Net effect: 0.
(but don't let that stop Weatherspoons from manipulating figures to make it seem otherwise)

Yeah must be profiteering. Because Brexit is going to have no effect at all.
Doesn't matter who's right though. Food is about to get more expensive.
      Hard Brexit now!

It's about time that we paid a realistic cost for food.

Not quite, and it might be a little bit worse than that :-)

There are no WTO rates, the WTO only sets out the rules for engagement. It’s up to the U.K. to lodge schedules with our own rates. At the moment the U.K. is proposing to essentially copy all existing rates for the EU schedules into the U.K. schedules.

However, without an FTA with a particular country, that means that the schedule rates apply.

So if the rate is £0.20 per bottle for wine from NZ, in the absence of any FTA that rate will now need to be applied to all wine from the EU. And we drink a lot of French, Italian, and Spanish wine.

We also lose the benefits of countries that the EU has agreements with, eg Chile. So that wine will go up as well.

Net effect: under MFN rules and with no FTAs, wine will go up.

I sit corrected. But I should add that wine will still go down in our house.

Yeah, Mrs meridian is a “wine angel”. I don’t know what it means apart from the fortnightly case of wine that turns up on the doorstep and the direct debit out of my account...

Why won’t they 3D print food directly in supermarkets, thus cutting out polluting trucks?
