"The European Union should adopt English as one of its most prominent languages after Brexit because the move would "force" the UK to "give to us one of the very best products of Britain", a former Italian prime minister has said.

Mario Monti, who is also a former EU commissioner, said Europeans "should find ways to upgrade the use of English" in official bodies after Britain's departure from the EU.

The move would serve "two purposes" - forcibly taking one of Britain's "very best products", and increasing the European Union's competitiveness with the UK on the world stage."

Let's see what the French President thinks of that idea. I can just see him now, having some kind of fit at the very idea. French is the first language of the EU, and once we're gone, every trace of the English language will be removed. Macron would sooner adopt Swahili before they agree to speaking English...

Dream on, you clearly don't know the French! They actually have laws which prevent the use of English phrases in official communication, banned words include "weekend", "email" and "hashtag". They use convoluted French "translations" instead.

Not quite true. The Académie française acts as the official authority on the usages, vocabulary, and grammar of the French language and publishes it's findings each year however, its recommendations carry no legal power and are sometimes disregarded even by governmental authorities. They try their best but it doesn't always work. In fact in Germany there is something very similar and I suspect in other countries too...
