Contract offer pulled at last minute - no explanation

    Hi all,

I was offered a contract role through an agent and had to supply 5 years worth of background details for checks to be made.

The offer was subsequently withdrawn due to my background checks. Now neither the agent or the firm offering the contract will tell me why.

I have issued a data access requst to them in writing to invoke the data protection act to attempt to determine the cause of the failure.

Is there anything else that I can do here to find out why the contract offer was withdrawn? Has anyone had any eperience of dealing with this kind of situation?

    thanks

Yes. Don't bother. They won't tell you, because if they do people will know what to lie about.
      Blog? What blog...?

or start bleating about how they shouldn't have failed for this and that when it is up to the client and their risk policy, not the opinion of the failed candidate.

Although you probably won't change their mind about giving you the contract, I think you have done the right thing with the DPA subject request. It could very well be that they were given wrong information about you and it's worth protecting your reputation by tracking down where it came from and getting it corrected.

Don't let it eat you up though, your energies are best focused on finding the next contract.

Came into post exactly that. If the OP was denied the contract on the basis of an interview or something, I'd be saying that the OP should just take it on the chin and walk on. But if something's cropped up in background checks, he should be aware what the problem is so that he can rectify it, or just ignore roles which require 5 years of background checks.

It could be some errant information (not held in a credit check) that needs rectifying. I'd be pushing for an explanation on this point as well.
