I think the 183 days a year rule applies to me as I am posted to work in Germany same as if I was working for any company in UK and asked to spend few days a week on client site in Germany - but I am sure that many people exceed that (183 rule) and some are contractors and some are employees. Anyway to avoid the risk will try not to exceed the 183 days rule and leave although there is very little risk of being caught even less so of proving how many days were worked in germany itself as i also work from Home (UK).
Even if you work less than 183 days you will be liable for tax. One or two posts from contractors who did just that, they did 3 or 4 month contracts and are facing charges for tax evasion. The 183 rule only means you will be liable for tax on worldwide income; you're liable for German tax on emplyoment or business income from day one.

If you do work 3 or 4 months only the tax will be low anyway and it may well still be exempt from a top up tax from the UK authorities. Certainly you won't be worse off if you do tax yourself for a short contract. Can't see the point of not registering, makes no financial sense at all.

Where one pays tax is a matter of fact not a matter of choice.
