Corp tax - what to do if amount is unknown?

My corp tax is due for payment in a few days but I don't have my end of year accounts. Should I just pay a rough guess amount for now then sort the final figure with HMRC once I know the exact amount?

Why not phone your tax office and ask them? Mine have always been helpful with queries.

Why not fire a rocket up your accountants arse?

Pay the estimated amount. Try to overestimate, as any money you have overpaid will be paid back at whatever the standard interest rate is at the moment.

I don't get it, you have had 9 months to get your accounts ready, what possible excuse is there?

Laziness / being too busy are mine, usually.

Last year's got paid on the day, because I hounded the accountant two days before, because I was too busy / lazy to sort out the receipts etc. for him.

              A few things:-

              1. Thinking the date on companies house was the date my corp tax is due - wrong.

              2. Notifying my accountant late.

              3. Xmas period.

              4. Wiped out with flu.

It's ok, I'll just over-pay then sort it out later, I'll probably get more interest back from them than I would from my bank.
