      NO, NO, NO!!!!!!!!

One cannot opt out of "employment law"!!!! It's the same for all employers and employees.

A contractor can opt out of the agency regulations, but that has absolutely no relevance here. What possible relevance can the agency regulations have on an invite to a party or not????

don't listen to them, takeaguess!! demand a meeting with your boss straight away and tell them how unfair it is that contractors are expected to meet this crippling cost. if you stick to your guns, i personally guarantee you will earn his or her respect and the gratitude of all your fellow contractors. don't wait until your next Employee Performance Review to air your grievances: do it now!

if he attends the party can he charge the client for the time

(last Xmas party i attended all contractors & staff were invited for FREE, except staff got the afternoon as paid time, contractors just had to make do with the free beer and food)

I understand where the confusion lies. Cleaning contractors turn up after the party, not during. Unless you've been asked to serve drinks, of course.

This is clear discrimination of contractors.

Let us know who the client is and we will bombard them with complaints and telephone calls.

                CONTRACTORS UNITE!!!

                  against

There's no need for us to bombard them with telephone calls. We can just pass their details to a few select recruitment agencies, they'll be changing their numbers in no time

And when you get a performance review followed by a pay rise, buy your colleagues a round of drinks.
