claim travel costs as expenses of limited company

Hello, everyone. I have another question on the travel costs for my limited company. I've set up a UK limited company. My contract won't start until July. But I plan to travel back home to Ireland every weekend. I've heard different opinions of whether travel costs back to your main residence outside UK can be claimed as the expenses of my limited company. Some people say you can claim that for first 2 years. And I've approached an accountant and she said that it is not recommended to claim that as the expenses of the limited company as it is not for running my business. I just want to see if someone came across this before. Really appreciated if you can share your experiences! Thank you!

    Not enough information...

    1. Do you have a permanent home address in the UK or are you staying in temp accommodation in the UK during the week?

    2. Have you read the "Contractor Expenses" sticky over there on the right of the page?

    3. Are you a UK or non-UK tax payer? You don't get the costs back, only the tax on them. That will vary depending on where you are tax resident.

    4. Are you charging your expenses to the client or are they YourCo's costs of sales?
    Blog? What blog...?

      Hello, malvolio.

      To answer your questions there.

      1. I have rented an accommodation in UK. This would be my address in UK. But my main residence address is in Ireland.
      2. I haven't read that yet. I will do it now. Thanks for pointing out!
      3. I shall be a UK tax payer.
      4. No, I am not charging this cost to my client.

      Thanks!

If you weren't in the UK previously and you are specifically in the UK for this contract hence the rent and flights I would claim them.

However if you have been working in the UK previously (anyone of the last 3 tax years) and there is a pattern of UK residence I would not claim the rent and flights as they are personal expenditure and not work related.
