  3. Sticky Thread Sticky: Why am I paying Employers NI?

OK so I get asked this question over and over and it appears that some companies still cease to explain things properly to contractors leaving them disgruntled when they see their first payslip, so let me explain the situation in simple terms for any newbies... So what you need to be aware of is...

  4. Sticky Thread Sticky: Should I trade as a Limited Company, umbrella or composite

Hi everyone, Can't help but notice that there are many posts on here that ask the same question - should I use an umbrella or my own Ltd Company. Thought it might be useful to summarise once and for all the pros and cons of each method and how much you would be likely to take home. Might save...

  6. Sticky Thread Sticky: Don't be fooled by imposter umbrella companies

I've decided to repost this following a couple of sad posts regarding HMRC Enquiries on umbrellas that were not what they seemed. As the latest umbrella company (Compusource) hits the buffers with contractor's money, I thought I'd remind people what 'due diligence' is all about. It's all...

There have been so many questions by new contractors about umbrella companies and the way that they work that I thought I would put together a help guide. 8. Sticky Thread Sticky: Umbrella companies 'expenses policy' changed

We have had a great deal of enquiries lately about umbrella companies 'expenses policies' changing so I thought I would offer a little clarification. Umbrella companies do not really have an 'expenses policy' as they can only process those expenses that will be allowed under HMR&C guidelines,...

  2. Sole Trader to Umbrella

I have been a self-employed web designer for many years (no contracting) and will be starting a part-time, short-term contract soon for an initial 3 months. It seems sensible to operate within an umbrella company but I still have customers who I provide web design services for as a sole trader....

Just signed up to Appytech umbrella after being told they are a mutural. After my first weeks pay slip I am suspicious. Appytech was sent funds from my agent. Hi, I've recently finished a regular job, and have now been offered some contract work. 8. Danbro - cracking pension/childcare scheme

Been searching for a while. Some umbrellas are crap for pension and only do the minimum - the rest has go in via AVC so you negate the NI saying. Danbro let you treat all pension contributions as employer contribs. So you're saving ALL the NI (inc employer NI I think?). Same with childcare...

  15. Pension contributions when working through an Umbrella

I assume that pension contributions cannot be made before tax, so it would be a personal contribution and 20% would be added to the value, again I assume as I would be higher rate tax payers I could claim back more on my SA?
