Hi tried this. fsc/scannow (it's an XP pro machine btw)

Ran from a command window, and a windows dialog appeared to say that it was working.

However flicked to a few other browser windows while this was running and it must have just completed and closed, so didn't see what the outcome was

Put it in a batch file and put pause command at end.

Safe to assume you've tried Regsvr32 to re-register the DLL?

Since it's quite apparent that the registry is badly nadgered I think you will eventually wind up rebuilding the O/S from scratch, I'd cut my losses and do it now, it's a damn sight faster and more reliable than patching up a severely busted build.

          Fixed it

          Hi all,

Just wanted to feedback what actually fixed this.

Convinced the Registry settings for running exe files were corrupted. Don't think there was anything wrong with rundll32.exe itself.

Tried various registry patch scripts but made no difference.

Booted in Safe mode and ran windows restore with the restore point from a few days before it all went wrong. The restore did complain that it hadn't worked correctly, but everything now looks to be fine.

          Thanks all for your suggestions.
