Dell precision M6600

Looking for a decent laptop with a 17" screen, I was drooling at the Dell Precision M6600, here, and for a giggle put together a fairly top-of-the-range system.

But choosing an NVIDIA Quadro 5010M with 4GB GDDR5 instead of the standard NVIDIA Quadro 4000M with 2GB GDDR5 adds a whopping extra £1,323.00 to the price!

WTF? How come there is such an enormous jump, for what seems like not that much difference? What would it buy you (literally) ?

Or would it be likely to give only a modest improvement but is intended solely for mega rich people to whom £1300 is a trifle?

Thats meant for CAD engineers and the like who need that level of firepower in their graphics card.
It's a specialist bit of kit, hence the price tag

Why do you want a Quadro of any sort - the Quadro range is not for mainstream use... in fact it's not even designed for gaming performance.

Have a look at the Dell XPS L702x off the outlet, some cracking bargains to be had off there if you don't mind a scratch or two on the case. I got an I7, 6gb mem, 17" AG display, 3Gb GT555m, 2 x 500gb hard disks and Windows 7 ultimate for the grand total of...£647 inc VAT & delivery. You've got to be quick to grab the bargains though, check between 3:15pm and 3:18pm for the best deals.

The Quadro graphics cost more because of all the ISV certification processes and relative low volumes.

Dell Precision M6600

I bought one of these for my new business in July 2012 and have found that it's way too powerful for my needs - I'm not doing it justice. I told Dell that I would be using it for high-end presentations in my education consultancy, but I find that I don't need it after all. I'm looking to sell it and get something a bit cheaper. If anyone wants to suggest how much I might get for it or make me an offer I would be very interested. I bought a three year service package with it, which I assume is transferable to the new owner.
