    PS3 won't run Black Ops

I visited my sister's family on Christmas Day, and had a pretty good time, except I was roped into diagnosing why a game called Black Ops wouldn't load or install on her husband's nephew's Playstation 3.

It's smaller, and drabber looking, than my sleak looking PS3, and displays "HDMI 1" instead of the "HDMI 2" which mine does. But apart from that no message or clue why the game wouldn't work on his - just a blank screen.

Can any PS3 experts think of a reason or suggest a remedy? It seems odd that there are two models called the same thing, especially with such an evident difference in functionality.

Perhaps he just needs to upgrade the firmware, and if so where can he download the upgrade files? Or would that be something he has to purchase?

(The game is rated 18, and he is 9 - I guess kids grow up fast these days )

If the screen is completely blank I would suspect that the video signal is being output at a resolution that the TV cannot handle. I would try to connect it by different leads and/or to different TVs to see what happens.

Have they tried loading another game and see if that runs ok? if the other game is ok then I'd suspect the tv set up.

Is the tv capable of playing this game? We had issues with a game on an XBox. Turns out the game ran on 50Mhz and the tv was set to 60. so wouldnt run the game.

I reckon about 90% of the people that play Black Ops are under 18. They seem to be learning a lot of detail from it as well. When I was a kid I could identify a Sten gun and an MG42, a Luger and maybe a couple of others. My kids can ID pretty much any weapon made between 1930 and the present day, as far as I can tell. If someone could just find a way of sneaking maths and science problems into these games, we'd soon have a generation of geniuses.

As you know, the ps3 will display a login menu on boot. If that screen is visible, use the menu to turn off the disk auto play then whack the disk in. If it doesn't recognise it the disk is knackered.

Or, perhaps you're trying to load the 360 version?

If the ps3 is plugged into the Internet it will download any updates automatically.

Also, WTF would you buy your 9 year old kid a gory blood fest of a game?

HDMI is HDMI the 1 and 2 are just the inputs on the TV Shirley?

The console is just a slimmer version, smaller cooler running chips allow them to make a smaller box, no difference in functionality.

If the boot screen works without the game it's either a knackered disk or parental controls in the settings? Not sure how that works with a PS3 as I'm an Xbox man.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

It's free. upgrade via the "Settings" menu option (2nd option in from far left) and then the "Update" option at the top. I think 3.55 is the latest.
