e-book readers... Kindle Vs Nook Vs iPad Vs ???

I've read all our books and we have little room for more, especially since we rent and it was enough of a pain packing last time! I thought I'd take a little look at electronic book readers, and wondered if people here have any experience?

The obvious option is a dedicated book reader like the Kindle. The fact it's designed to look more like paper than a computer screen is a big factor since I dislike reading on the computer, but the proprietary closed-source issue is a factor since you'd hate to spend £100s on a library and then lose it if you later bought another device... on the other hand I don't want to read free scanned books which look like a secretary just scanned the book haphazardly on their photocopier!
The Nook is in direct competition but seems a little new right now, any thoughts?
And then the iPad markets itself as a reader, but I'm not convinced. Other than price, it's a normal screen which implies battery life and ease-on-the-eye might be compromised.

Are there other things out there? And while a open-source platform is nice in theory, do you really benefit from a platform on which every book is custom-formatted/prepared for the device (i.e the Kindle)?

Also, can you read them in the bath (serious question) in any safe kind of way?

I bought a Sony eReader PRS 300 as a late Christmas pressie for myself, the main reason at the time was that you could read not only the propietary book format but PDF's.

Got to admit it took a while to get used to it but now wouldn't be without it...great little toy to have if you prefer reading to watching loads of cr#p on the telly.....although never would try reading in the bath with it.

I got the Sony PRS550 and find it great especially as I'm away from home a lot and don't want to carry books around. Supports quite a few formats and so far I'm more than happy with it (so much so that Frau D. is getting the newer version for her birthday.)
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

e-book readers... Kindle Vs Nook Vs iPad Vs ???

My personal thoughts on kindle vs nook vs ipad... to me ipad does not compare with kindle or nook in terms of
being paper-like ebook reader or its functionality, or screen reading comfort so i would suggest
you take it out of your choices. To compare kindle vs nook, i have bought a new kindle and i love it, it is
very easy to use by anyone and its functionality is far better than nook and i wouldn't doubt that being manufactured by such a big company like Amazon.
Kindle has a variety of book titles available and the list keeps increasing and amazon seems to really care much about this device more than any other device they sell and therefore they obviously keep working on improving it and publishing more and more accessories/ebooks supported with it, also one good thing
i like about kindle is you can easily find a program such as Calibre and
convert a book format you find somewhere to another like ePud to PDF, etc. Also keep in mind that nook my cause
eye strain after a long period of reading on it while this is not the case with kindle. Also as of last time i checked its price, Kindle is cheaper
than nook and also it is lighter than it.

I haven't tried a Nook or iPad but what I can say is that the Kindle is an excellent piece of kit. Very easy to read, even in the poor lighting you get on flights.

Loads of free book sites out there (Project Gutenberg for example) and software like Calibre is great for converting/editing metadata etc.

For £111 it's well worth it.

I have a Kindle and also kindle software on my Droid phone.

What I love most is that regardles of which device I last used, the other device is made aware of how far of got and will allow me to progress to that point.

            Brilliant.....

I do exactly the same and agree it is bloody ace.

The bottom line here is preference. Are you an avid reader or not? If you are a part time reader to pass the time of day then you Driod, Iphone Ipad is fine.

If you enjoy a good read anywhere then you need to seriously consider the Kindle. The e-ink think is bloody amazing and can be read in direct sunlight, which an Ipad can't. The kindle is incredibly light and you can hold it for hours and the battery just lasts forever. You will need a light source to read at night but mine has a built in light.

I took it to Egypt for the week on the family holiday as I don't do dawn to dusk sunbathing. Got myself a couple of cheap books, sat in the shade and read like there was no tomorrow. No worries letting the kids read it when they were bored and so on. Fabulous piece of kit.

Ipad, phone etc is fine for quick read to pass the time of day but for me Kindle wins hands down for holiday, travelling and so on. Might hurt spending the extra £100 if you have ipad but if you don't it is a bloody bargain. I would highly recommend a Kindle.

Dont think you can with any of them really, thats why I still buy 50/50 print vs electronic as I read a lot in the bath so buy certain books especially for that.

I have an iPad and its undoubtedly a great bit of kit but if you are after a device to be used primarily for reading then the Nook/Kindle are your best bet, iPad would be overkill and not as good at that particular task (although it IS a pretty good reading device).

Its handy having a backlight on the iPad as a lot of my reading is in the dark at bedtime but you can get covers with lights for all the e-ink ones. Battery wise, the iPad is actually pretty good but as far as I know, the e-ink readers last ages on a charge.

I'd go a Kindle, but sure i saw recently (on engadget i think) that there was an offer on the Nook where they threw in £x worth of free books so i'd maybe check that out.

Edited - Ah, just looked up the offer i'd seen and it was you get 30 free books if you swap your old ebook reader for a Nook so no good for the OP.

I've had my Kindle several months now and love it. I got the 3G version which doubles up as an emergency way to check my email - for free - when travelling.

And I do read it in the bath, 2-3 times a week over the last few months.

But do you still rest the 4kw electic fire on the edge to keep your toes warm?
