Newbie: Agents asking about other interviews

In trying to secure my first contract, I have been asked by several agents so far what other clients I am seeing / what interviews I have lined up.

Why do they ask this and how should I answer?

    Thanks.

I always tell them, that I've only just started looking. They are trying to find out who else is hiring so that they can get in touch with them and try and put their people forward.
If there is a gap on your CV - just tell them you've had a break and are now looking again.
I am always very vague about what I tell agents regarding other interviews I'm having/had. I find if they have a serious contract to fill, they don't bother asking for references, other interviews etc. They come straight to the point with location and client.
I'm sorry, but I'll make no apologies for this

WHS - I just tell them I've just started looking so I haven't been put forward anywhere yet.

Never tell them about companies, agents, previous gigs etc... They are just fishing.

What Pogle said, if they are genuinely interested, they won't give a hoot about gaps.

Just had a fishing email from CF.

Who I last worked for in 2002, but apparently on the back of an 8 year old CV, they have something totally wonderful to offer me.

I stop looking at the end of the day. The next day, I start looking again, so I tell the agents "I only started looking today".

They are after leads. One recently that I spoke to, I told I had already had my CV sent over. He then asked me what rate I was being put forward at, and got annoyed that I wouldn't tell him.

I was torn between telling him £900 a day and £120 a day...

He he, me too, or tell them I've been looking for 3 weeks but haven't had a single lead yet, no interest, certainly no interview, hear them getting frustrated, then put the phone down.

File that one along with the emails from Nigeria saying that you've won 65,000,000 pounds.

bf2 - Do what the others have said. Tell them "Ohhh, you are the first agent I've spoken too!". They will normally wet their pants in anticipation of a sweet virginal contractor that they can shaft.

If they get you an interview, then tell them "Oooh, I'd better tell all the other agents I've spoken to about this interview then?" and listen to them scream like a stuck pig.

                  Good luck!
