    Advice re renewal

As a new contractor coming up to first renewal some advice from the older heads would be most welcome.

The client on site wants to sit down and discuss the renewal with me including rate.

From previous conversations with the agency, I have been told "never to discuss rates directly with the customer". I wonder why the agency wouldn't want me to do so:rolleyes

    Any advice??

You need to know what the customer is willing to pay so that you can verify the agency's margin. A good agency should be transparent over rates, but good agencies are an idiosyncracy!

I would also try and reduce the agency's margin as they're probably putting in very little effort on the contract by now anyways.

Cue all the pro-agency brigade to jump in...

      rates etc

Yep, the agent doesnt want the client to know how much they are charging, and they dont want you to know how much you are being ripped off by.

Have a word with other contractors on site to see what they are getting for similar roles.

Is it a Pref. Supplier or do they take staff from several agencies ?

Sitting down cannot really do you any harm - it might piss off the agency. Just be aware that the client might be looking to save money so think about what you might want to say to them. Have a quick look around jobswerve to see what other similar roles are paying at the mo.

        Re: rates etc

        Thanks for that.

There are Pref. suppliers but it seems that they then use other agents so I am in a position where there are two agents between me and the client.

Fortunately one of the suppliers advertises a rate for this job on their website so I have a starting point at least.
