Thanks FaQQer, that's what everyone should be doing. There is help on doing thsi on the site. Don't think it's a waste of time, we now have some Labour MPs who have written to the chancellor sugegsting that it's not a good idea.

Every letter helps - even if you are personally not affected by this one, if they get away with it you can be sure the next idea will get you.

My MP works in the Treasury. I'm not convinced that she'll be on-side

That said, before the last election she sent flyers round asking if she could count on my vote. I wrote back and politely explained that she could not, and why not. To her credit, she wrote back and said that although she was disappointed that I wouldn't be voting for her, if she was elected then she was elected to represent all constituents, not just those that voted for her.

As an MP, she's pretty good. It's a shame that she represents a party who's policies I cannot support, and she seems to vote with the Government on every single issue.

Yep, I've got exactly the same. When I challenged him at his surgery on why they thought it necessary, he rolled out the "you have to be fair and you have to stop people cheating" line. He was quite shocked at the idea that you do that by making it simpler, not more complex. He was considerably more shocked when I pointed out the basic arithmetic mistake in the consultation paper that blows the economic argument out of the water (hint - they forgot about £15k CT). I've since written a fuller letter to lay out the points in detail, and he's passing that on the Chancellor as of last Friday.

I have asked how if the consultation ends on February 28th, and the budget is on March 12th, how will they be able to cope with taking the feedback on board in order to take a fair and balanced view of the proposed legislation.

They can't. Unless they simply defer it a year, which I can't see happening.

They can't. It's a bogus consultation and they have no intention of changing anything singificant at all.

You are all wasting your time complaining about it (on the basis that you aren't going to get the man in the street onside).

Thanks for your support. Luckily, there are those have the balls to try, if only on the basis that we sure as hell won't get anything if we don't.

But there's a cost to "trying too hard", you annoy the opposition so they take no notice of you at all.

IMHO, I don't think that contractors have the moral high ground here. In my 25 years of contracting the consensus has been that "income splitting" was not quite right, many contractors admitted it, many accountants admitted it, they only did it because it was "allowed".

And it is also disingenuous of people to argue that it is an unexpected change that they don't have time to plan for. Anybody who has been following the Arctic case knew damned well that it was going to come immediately, if the IR lost.

I accept that the legislation as drafted will affect people that it is (perhaps) not designed to affect, but by going in, all guns blazing, with the only aim of trashing the change completely, you lose the opportunity to make reasoned changes that might have been acepted.

                    Just my 2p worth.
