NI contributions Letter From The HRMC

Got a letter from IR today saying that for 2005 - 2006 my NI contributions were not enough for it to go towards a qualifying year of pension. It said

'our records show you contributions in 2005-2006 fell short by 52 weeks and you need to pay xxxx to making it a qualifying year'

The amount owed is approx £500 so not too much, BUT what is the minimum amount of NI needed a year to making it a qualifying year ? Also that year I was operating through GIANT MSC I worked the full year and and took min wage, wouldnt the NI generated by that be enough ? I dont understand 'the fell short by 52 weeks either' could that mean the MSC never passed on my NI out of my income ?

Not really keen to get in a dicussion with IR regarding NI payments while I was with an MSC would rather just pay up.

    Why not?

You were through Giant as a MSC ... READ: Managed Service Company ... ie., they were "managing" parts of your business. YOU are the MSC. So, they are surely culpable. Why else pay them big bucks per year to help "payroll" you?

Get in touch with HMRC and direct them to GIANT. Then get in touch with GIANT and give them the relevant details.

To fall short by 52 weeks obviously points to an administrative error - this sort of letter is usually aimed to help people who have left the system temporily (maternity leave + ?) and is aimed to give them a chance to catch up.

Nothing scary assuming GIANT are all above board.

This is an error on the part of HMRC. There computer system is rubbish. This happens to me every few years. Call them they will explain (they are nice and friendly). Just send a copy of your P60 and it will be resolved or do nothing and the system will eventually catch up with itself. It is to do with delayed processing of PAYE. Nothing to worry about and no need to contact Giant. I got one this year too.

I've got exactly the same letter and I was with Giant. HMRC said to leave it a few months as there system was a bit behind. If GIANT haven't paid your NI contribution to HMRC (like they should have) then they'll be in a lot of bother.

Sounds like Class 2? Do you need to pay Class 4 too?

No it isn't - it's Class 1. As I said before it's one of 2 things - Giant haven't forwarded the NI to HMRC (possible) or the HMRC database needs updating (probable).

I used to be a National Insurance Inspector for the DHSS and used to deal with these forms all the time.
