Monday Links from the Bench vol. CCCXCIII

It's too hot again; best to not move too much and waste time with this lot rather than attempting to work
    • How (Not) to Kill Kim Jong Un - "The history of failed attempts on the lives of Pyongyang’s leaders shows if you come for the Kims, you better not miss." I particularly liked the secret commando death squad whose training was so brutal that they revolted and tried to kill the South Korean president instead

    • We Figured Out What the Smell in Our Office Is and Are No Longer Taking Internship Applications - "So for a while now there has been this looming smell in the VICE UK office, over the editorial desk… We figured after it had been running for a few days that it wasn't any of us.”

    • JFK Airport Runway Shut Down By Pregnant Turtles, Reports Say - "Several airplane passengers stuck on the JFK tarmac Friday afternoon reported on social media that their planes were being held due to multiple turtles crossing the runway." Wonder if there were any hares racing them.

    • Target: London - A look at the remains of the V3: ”V3s were cannon or superguns capable of firing from the Pas de Calais in Northern France to London… Since the gun barrels would be over 400 feet long, fixed sites were needed with drifts to support each barrel. Near the V1 and V2 launch sites (including the Eperlecques Bunker), a new fortress was built underground at Mimoyecques.”

    • Chris Grady's 'Lunar Baboon' Comic Spreads Positivity While Depicting Mental Health Struggles - "Chris Grady, a teacher from Toronto and the artist behind the Instagram account “Lunar Baboon,” wants to bring small moments of happiness to people’s days with his creative family-centered comics… While the comics are often sweet and lighthearted, they’re also powerful and honest in depicting a character’s struggle with mental illness.”

    • The Most Important Object In Computer Graphics History Is This Teapot - The story of the familiar teapot model: ”One day over tea, Newell told his wife Sandra that he needed more interesting models. Sandra suggested that he digitize the shapes of the tea service they were using, a simple Melitta set from a local department store. It was an auspicious choice: The curves, handle, lid, and spout of the teapot all conspired to make it an ideal object for graphical experiment."

    • Spiral Escalators Look Cool, But Do They Make Sense? - The first one was on the Piccadilly Line, but never put into service: ”It had no stairs and was simply a sloping travelator, with guide rails along the sides… The escalator would have been dark, dangerous and extremely noisy—more like a test of endurance than a space-efficient way of getting from platform to pavement.”

    • Photos from South London’s forgotten tube tunnel experiment - Speaking of forgotten Tube constructions: ”An experimental tube tunnel dug in the 1970s, then sealed up and never seen again, until recently. A recent structural inspection has taken photos of this little known part of London Underground’s history.”

    • VisuAlgo - ”Visualising data structures and algorithms through animation.” A very neat tool for understanding how computer science-y stuff works

    • Garfield is Dead - HT to cojak for this one: ”I was bouncing around retroCRUSH the other day, when I came across the creepiest comic strip-related thing I have ever seen: Garfield’s death… Here are the strips in question, which ran from October 23 to October 28, 1989.”

    Happy invoicing!

Interesting about the turtles in JFK. Noticed a turtle on the runway flying back from JFK about 2 weeks ago.
On landing in Heathrow, the flight attendant said if the pilot had known he wouldn't have taken off till the runway was clear since they could have been sucked into the engines - but on a 747 the pilots have limited visibility.
      Hard Brexit now!

Indeed. However I thought the worst bit was identifying the person concerned. We all make mistakes.

Some good links, though if I could request more science and tech please. I know it's free but if you don't ask

            Requests now, is it?

I'll see what I can do, though I hope you realise that the Powers That Be both here and in the global superpowers are extremely suspicious of anything that constitutes incontrovertible fact based on rationality, or applications thereof that threaten to liberate those whom they hold subject

I guess that's one reason some companies prohibit food in offices. That and rodent infestations & sticky crumby keyboards

I got the impression she went along with it, though - in the circles in which she clearly wishes to build a career, "I'm the chicken woman from Vice" would probably be an instant hire at interview
