Is it easy to do your own payroll?

    Thinking of using this?

    IRIS Payroll Basics

...but not sure if it's going to cause me more hassle than it's worth.

    Five employees to look after.

A new member posting links, and then asking about the software may indicate an attempt to market a product. I've given you the benefit of the doubt - but removed the link.

Yes. Try Payroo. Sorry if that's ruined your ad.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

IRIS are flippin massive, not some little start up...so I very much doubt the OP is part owner trying to get them noticed.

Payroll is relatively straight forward when nobody joins/leaves/goes on maternity etc. However, it can easily get very complex. Auto enrolment doesn't help, and it gets much worse if you start doing things like share options.

Depends how savvy you are, and whether your company tries to do anything clever that makes the payroll messy.

He could possibly be a specialist in digital marketing who is either trying to sell his services to them, or already has a contract with them. Or he might really have five employees and want to run payroll for free.

I have employees, we run our own payroll. We just use Basic PAYE Tools. It actually does some things that some other packages don't, too.

We run a generous pension plan which is far better than the pension AE, so everyone opts out of it. You still have to set it up, you can set it up free with Nest. But it means we don't have to tie in the pension plan with payroll.

It's incredibly easy with software such as FreeAgent and a basic understanding of how payslips are assembled.

HMRC Basic PAYE Tools is free, easy to use, and gives you all that you need.

The downside of the basic tool is that it doesn't produce payslips. I can recommend a free hmrc approved software. If it is of interest, I can share it on PM so it doesn't sound as an advert.

Does it handle mis-timed payments? Most don't. How many employees can it handle and still be free? Some of the free ones have a limit.

If it is free, I don't know why anyone would care about you advertising it, but maybe admin would say not to.

Payslips are really, really easy to produce....
