    SUV Recommendations

I've been driving a RAV4 forward the last 9 years - got 120k on the clock & probably need to replace it before big things start going wrong.

Very impressed with reliability to date though & I'd like another one but all the Jap 4x4s are so damn big these days. More like MPVs.

Essentially I need something rugged and compact - do a lot of driving down narrow, potholed country lanes.

Quite like the look of the Jeep Renegade; don't know what jeep reliability is like but price is good.

Used to like the Discovery but I've got a feeling they've got ridiculously big like all the others.

Anyone recommend a decent compact 4x4?

When did the RAV4 change to be too big? Could you get one from the year before?

Mazda CX-5. Best of the bunch until you get to silly money poseurmobiles, and bloody nice to drive. Latest version out about now, fixes the very few niggles I have with mine. 2.2D 2WD is the bees knees value-for-money version but I went for the top end 4wd one. That will stay with a Golf GTi up to about 70...

I tried all of them when I bought mine. Closest was the new Sportage but it was still a way behind on performance and drivability.

Seat Alteca - a VW Tiguan with a less expensive badge.

Drove a Renegade rental in Italy in March, was quite impressed with it.

My next car will be the Alfa Stelvio, but many who know little about cars, but trott out the same anecdotes will tell you to avoid them.

XC60 is good but woefully overpriced. New XC90 is good but too big and overpriced.

Small Rangeys are silly. Big Rangeys are brilliant but really silly. Same goes for Audi Q5s and Q7s. VW's versions are bland and boring. Anyway if you're spending that kind of money, buy a Porsche Macan.

If you want an excellent, reliable, non-trendy car get a Subaru Forester. Not too big, I think.

True, but the current one nowhere near as good as the last of the petrol versions. Had an XTEn with the same motor as the Impeza WRX. That would scare a lot of supposedly fast cars...
