Linux Mint live DVD - boot from that and see if it can read the drive.

Can't you just allocate the call to 2nd line and then it's not your problem?

Im sure you think you're funny but just FYI:-

        1. It my PC at home.
        2. I've never worked on 1st line support EVER.
        3. PCs are not my skillset anyway.

What OS is it running? When did it last work? When did you last install updates?

Do you have the box the computer came in?

Just do what The Faqqer said. Or take the HD out of the machine and see if another machine can read it. You could either connect directly, or put it in a caddy and go via USB.

I've used Feather Linux before for the same reason.

Currently trying to recover data from a drive for a neighbour. Her 4 year old daughter dropped the laptop on the floor. It hadn't been backed up in ages. It has all the baby photos on it. Won't boot. No partition found. EaseUS Partition Manager couldn't fix it after 12 days. (750GB drive being seen as 2TB)
                Now running CGS Photorec 7.1.
                Time to complete: 382hr 54min.
