Infrastructure Guys - What`s actually hot right now?

It recently occurred to me that I don`t feel like I`m seeing anything particularly new and clever coming through at the minute. Plenty of organisations still trying to get things like SCCM/MDT working properly, virtualisation is broadly the same as it was 5 years ago though Hyper-V continues to steal market share due to being cheap. I`ve seen a big move to Cisco UCS and the like, but again, all broadly the same tulip with different badges. The only big difference I`m seeing in data centres now is the amount of flash storage, which is nice, but again, it`s hardly new technology. I`m seeing more hyper-converged bits and pieces, I guess.

Or, to look at it another way, if I could switch my skillset overnight I have no idea what I`d choose. I`m probably least familiar with networking - has the magic of SDN started to actually appear in your average companies production environment yet?

Ports are going to be a bit quiet after Brexit. Not sure that's the way to go. Plasterer maybe...

Switching skillset isn't your problem. Getting demonstrable experience on your CV is but I guess you knew that?

We will bow to your expert commercial knowledge of this sector.

Fair point, but it`s not really within what I`m talking about. Containers haven`t really come over to the Wintel world yet and they`re certainly not really disrupting anything.

I was just musing really - been working with the same tech for 6 years now. I`m lucky enough that my current skills and contacts in the industry are diverse enough that I could probably wiggle my way into many areas, but even so, I don`t know where to head. There just doesn`t seem to be anything super exciting going on in the Windows-y infrastructure world

If I were looking to go freelance I'd stick GDPR Project Manager on my CV - this is Y2k big.

EDIT - Just seen this is an infrastructure thread, I'd still look for a GDPR angle.

Also consider PSD2 (Open Banking) and MiFID II
"Hope your doing fine". My favourite opening line in emails from certain agencies! Not only the fact they can't spell, but who actually says that?

Containers are in Windows server 2016. So there's your starter for 10.
Azure and aws are the game changers though so why not them?
