too good to be true? help choosing umbrella services

i have been researching on different umbrella companies and these are their company margin rates i have been given

    applytech- £5
    green lantern- 6% or £25
    haregenant- 5% or £25
    infoqis- 5% or £25
    unity cs- £21.50
    crestplus- 21.50
    numbermill- £15
    payerise- £15
    fpsgroup- £15
    pluspay - £7.50

these figures do not account the apprenticeship levy which will be implemented 6th april. (still confused on this) some companies include in pay illustration, others do not.
as you can see pluspay and applytech have a weekly charge rate that is way cheaper then the rest. though, pluspay have no uk number and address so we can cross them out. but applytech have a uk address and number. and have spoken to one of their representatives. they seem legit and said there are no hidden cost, joining fee, leaving, etc.. is it too good to be true?

This thread applies to umbrellas whether you are in the public or private sector.

Be aware that not all umbrellas are legitimate - some will get you into trouble with HMRC.

I will not be allowing any representative from a company that is ineligible for membership into AUCAE.

Pretty much all umbrella companies will be hit by the Apprenticeship Levy - payroll over £3m, unless the companies are not declaring their full payroll to HMRC or they are so small they are not hit (but highly unlikely). So make sure they can justify why it hasn't been shown!

Do your checks on Duedil too - sometimes shows some interesting links

If you want the easiest test of all - look at the take home, if you are a 40% tax payer any compliant umbrella should be giving you a figure of around 52-56% take home - if not make sure you do your checks thoroughly.

Do some quick checks to see what the company looks like.

Apply Tech? Nope - not showing on Companies House. I'll presume you meant Appy Tech - founded March 2015, cash £43k, net worth £26k. That's a net worth of two maybe three invoices

Infoqis? Nothing on Google for them, nothing for "Infoqis umbrella". No company by that name.

Crest Plus? No company number on the website, no VAT number. Are they Crest Plus Limited (dissolved with a net worth of -£310k), Crest Plus Operations (still in business) or any of the other Crest Plus businesses registered in the same location? Hard to tell which one you're dealing with without knowing the company number.

Haregenant? Nope - not showing on Google, not showing on Companies House...

Are you sure you're dealing with real companies??

You're lucky you get to choose your umbrella co. In my experience the agent has dictated a list of 2 or 3. I've been through more umbrella cos than I care to remember.
