Lords defeat government over rights of EU citizens in UK

Looks like A50 before end of March is going to require some overtime

Theresa May’s government has vowed to overturn a demand by the House of Lords to guarantee the rights of EU citizens living in the UK within three months of article 50 being triggered.

Ministers were said to “disappointed” by a heavy defeat in which peers voted 358 to 256 in favour of amending the Brexit bill, but made clear that their position would not change on the issue.

Seven Conservatives including the former cabinet minister Douglas Hogg lined up with the Labour party, Liberal Democrats and crossbenchers to demand formal reassurances for more than 3 million Europeans already resident in Britain.

There will now be intense pressure on Conservative backbench MPs to follow suit when the bill returns to the Commons for another vote in just under a fortnight.

Nothing to see here. Ponged back around 14 March, cleaned up, and ready for Royal Ascent on 15 March, exactly as planned.

This is a non issue, so we take the high ground and unilaterally provide residency to EU citizens. What's the EU going to do, not do the same? Of course they are, or they will look bad.

Agreed, Gov.uk will simply remove the clause from the bill and send it back

I'm sure we said this was going to happen in another thread. Commons will kick it back. I'd be happy with a 'we will if they do' clause but I doubt that will be needed.

If the Lords repeat their error then they are history.

Stupid Lords. I think it's clear that the govt does want to protect the rights of EU citizens already here, and will happily negotiate this in return for a reciprocal arrangement.

The Lords are asking the govt to give away this negotiation point in return for nothing. I'm sure we'll see lots more stupidity like this with people screaming that "we should allow blah blah blah" when of course we should but we have to go through the charade of negotiating it in return for something rather than just giving it away.

I guess that this is why negotiations take so long ... because most of it is just posturing and fscking about wasting time

That's exactly what it is. It's ridiculous. The rest of the EU are not complaining about British migrants; there's no likelyhood of the EU not upholding the rights of British citizens. The only government who are threatening this at all are the British government, and it's only the British people who voted for Brexit because of EU migration. But even GB9 thinks migrants should get to stay, so why not simply do the right thing and put everyone's minds at rest?

The whole point, so we were told, was to "get control of our borders" (said in a Monty Python Gumby-man voice). So here's the first opportunity to control who gets to stay and who doesn't, and what happens? We have to wait for the EU to make the decision.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.
