Car insurance questions after a road incident!!

    Hi All

I recently involved in a road 'incident' where by car's bonnet got opened while driving and windshield got smashed and bonnet damaged (no other car involved). I was having a perfect driving history with 10 years + NCB. But looks like this incident ruined all that!! I didn't had NCB protected. This incident happened 10 miles away from my home so definitely I didn't keep my bonnet open from home.

What are the options I have..?? My car is under repair with garage arranged by my insurance firm.

Q1. Since this is an incident not caused by my fault can I still have by NCB intact..? If so what I need to prove it is not my fault..? Should I get my car manufacturer involved as well..?? How could I get them to take some responsibility as it was caused by a fault in car. My car was regularly serviced by mail dealer as well.

Q2. My insurer asked me to pay the excess and remaining cost will be covered by them. Will they allow me to keep my NCB intact if I pay the full repair cost..??

Q3. Damage is mainly to the windscreen and bonnet. Normally windscreen damages will not affect NCB though in this case bonnet also got damaged.

Q4. I was in the process of selling this car as part exchange for my new car. My worry is due to this incident my car will show in any database as a car involved in an accident..?? and my new car dealer could refuse to accept this as part exchange car..? Mine is not write off - Bonnet an d windshield replacement only.

Please help if anyone had any experience closer to this and any helpful suggestions ..?? thanks.

Q1... the NCB is a no CLAIMS bonus, not a "not my fault bonus"
Q2... probably not. You have made a claim, they see it as a claim. Doesn't matter whether you pay it all now or not.
Q3... normal windscreen damage does not affect your NCB. Your bonnet not being properly secured does.
Q4... Once the car is repaired, then take it to the dealer. We are not car dealers.
…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore

Why did you not have your no-claims protected? I get one free incident a year.

Yeah right - NCB protection is a scam to profit the insurers.
You claim, your bonus remains intact but, surprise surprise, the base premium pre NCB discount rises sharply the following year.

To the OP, now the claim is registered, take the insurance payout and budget for the loss of two years NCB at your next renewal.

If the higher premium will be a concern, run a low insurance group car for a couple of years.

I think you need to learn how insurance works.

I had a claim with protected no claims bonus, shopped around and my insurance was cheaper. This year however I've got something like 6 years with no claims and my insurance was the same price or more when I shopped around.

Your claim history does effect your insurance premium but so do other factors including the number of claims in your postcode area, your age, the stock market and insurance premium tax.

I ran an Insurance Agency back in the '90's. I doubt much has changed since then.

Why did you tell the insurance in the first place?

Always keep insurance out of it unless you absolutely have to.

Allegedly I ran into the back of a car once and paid for the damage to their car and mine. I pointed out they could go through insurance - but the damage was probably less than the excess. They moaned, God knows why, however accepted it.

Only when you are involved in a incident like this you will realise what difference a small tick in insurance quote form will make..!!! I thought NCB protection is pointless and after 10 years NCB I even thought I will never get involved in an incident like this!!!

My new one in order will be impacted by the April car tax rules severely (i.e. why I am getting it by March end). So it will not be in low insurance group!!
