doing my first contract next week

Hi guys, long time lurker here and since i am starting my first contract thought id say hi.

the location is about 2 hours away from home so i may find somewhere to stay for a couple of nights to help break up the week.

im just after some suggestion on the best way to make this as cost effective as possible.

    Thanks everyone!

Cost effective as possible? Pay as little as possible or get someone else to pay for it.

But seriously. Did you not think to investigate this before you accepted the contract. I remember a guy on here that took a 180 quid a day contract and then realised he'd have to stay away. I've a feeling he was with a brolly as well.

If you dare venture in to General there is a sticky at the top all about contractors staying away.

If you go to the FAQ welcome section there is a sticky in there about how to search the forums using Google. If you've been lurking you should have known to try a search first.

Those two will thrown up discussions on every possible solution, even staying in a tent or caravan which the poster above me said

You aren't the guy that came to the Manchester meet are you?

If you don't put the location you are going to get answers from the sockies.

Depends on where you're staying and what your appetite for cheap living is.

Two no-cost options spring to mind:
See if you can work four long days instead of five normal ones and still invoice for the five
Look into the possibility of WFH on, say, a Wednesday. This means that you can have an overnight on Tuesday, one on Thursday and still get the miles in (if you're happy to do that).

              Other options include:
              Megabus for travel
Student accommodation for digs (especially during summer months).
Buying a campervan and staying in that near client; there was one parked up outside Sky when I worked there a few years ago.

Your actual location and gig location would be helpful.

You might find a two hour commute isn't all that bad. If you can do it by train, it's extra snooze time on the way out (set an alarm if your destination isn't a terminus) and winding down/relaxing time on the way back. Time your arrival/departure to avoid the worst of the great unwashed and it borders on pleasant.

As others have pointed out in the many commuting discussions had here, you may find that sitting in a hotel room is no fun at all when you realise you could be at home for the sake of a couple of hours travel. It rarely works out cheaper than the travel cost either (something you should have checked out before signing on the dotted line). Whilst you can get deals with hotels for your regular patronage, you may then find that you wind up stuck with the same hotel food over and over again.

Nah, he'd been contracting for years and knew the doings of CUK inside out. Unless he's just decided to try getting a rise out you with a sockie.

Well that's what I thought but had to ask.
