Apple make the hard things easy and the easy hard :(

I like the fact that my photos sync across devices and are backed up on iCloud. Now my iPhone 6s has run out of space and want to clear up some of the photos/videos to make space.

Apparently if I delete them from my phone, they will automatically be deleted from iCloud. Additionally as I have them optimised for my phone, which means a lowere res copy is stored on the phone and original on iCloud - thus I cannot scrape the pictures off the phone to a hard drive or something.

I am going through forums and it looks like it's not going to be easy. Ideally you want a button that says "delete from phone and not iCloud".

iPhoto / iCloud is one of the things Apple got badly wrong, it's not intuitive or flexible and there is no easy way to fix it.

I *believe* that you can delete the photo from the camera roll in the phone and that will free up space without removing it from iCloud but you might want to test that. I don't use iCloud or iPhoto so I could be wrong. Personally I use Drop Box with shared folders for everything, once it's uploaded it's still available and you can delete the originals from your phone.

This is why I ended up getting Office 365, with the 1Tb of One Drive space. My camera roll is set to auto sync to One Drive, I delete any photos off of my phone or iPad that I don't want, yet if I ever want them back I can save the, back to my device.

If course it's not easy, it's fecking Apple.

My other half had similar issues, we ended putting the photos elsewhere, before deleting from the iPhone.
Over the years, I've dealt with IPods, iTunes, transferring between Apple devices......
and I've never owned an Apple device personally

Not impossible, but, a right pain in the ring, so you can keep Apple, all day long as far as I'm concerned.

I suppose this is all about Apple wanting you to continually upgrade the phone to one with more storage? I also suppose this is also why Apple phones and pads do not have SD card slots?

            Exactly that, IMO.

And not only that, I've noticed that since the iOS10 upgrade, the battery life is rapidly being sucked from my iPhone 6 like nobody's business.

Lasy month I could go a couple (or more) days, just listening to the radio or iTunes, now I'm just lasting the day.

I suspect that the next upgrade will reduce it further...

Yes, that's exactly what happened to my Mrs.

She would never buy another one now, it only works some of the time now, if at all.
i.e. one of the upgrades totally spannered it

Same, and also true for my new iPhone 7 which replaced the 6

Right, apparently you can create folders on iCloud Drive. This need to pull down my photos from iCloud and then upload them to the folder on iCloud Drive. When I delete from the phone it will delete from iCloud but not iCloud Drive. I have not found a way of moving them from iCloud to iCloud Drive without going local which is crap really since there are already there.

As for the battery life, as cojak says it has gone to shhh. It's no longer making it through the day - just when I thought that was finally behind me and stopped carrying a charger.
