    Hostile Environment Day Rate Adjustment

    Hi all,

I've been contracting for a year for some people I used to work as an FTE for a few years back.

They've asked if I'd be willing to provide some tuition abroad in a country that is considered "semi hostile".

I've worked in these environments before for them so I have no problems with that, and we would get an added payment of what essentially amounted to "danger" money of about £100 a day for working in those environments.

This however would be the first time I would be doing such work as a contractor.

Would you raise your day rate by a percentage or a flat rate for working abroad as it's a) a hostile environment and b) you're essentially working 24 hours a day as there's no real downtime on these jobs?

Sorry if it's a bonehead question, I had a quick search of the forum but couldn't find anything directly applicable.

Well it's entirely up to you.

If you know the permies get + £100 a day for working there, then that gives you a good basis for working out what they might thin reasonable. Work out what you want and negotiate the best increase you can.

Question is what do you want for working in those conditions? I did some work in Egypt, Algeria, Morocco and Joberg when FCO were advising against all but essential travel to some of them. I was in a top notch hotel and the company provided a dedicated driver to and from work. The hotels are well guarded and have scanners to get in and out etc. I never actually went in to the public area except when my host there took me for meals and it was fine. I believe the gold coast states tend to put you in enclaves so you never actually go out.
As long as you don't go wandering around in public too much or go back packing in the wilds they should be ok.

Need to look at what measures your client has in place in these countries. You are escorted everywhere or you are left to your own devices.

I didn't charge anymore on the daily rate. Made a killing on IHG points using the credit card and staying at Crowne Plaza hotels and the airlines so got something out of it.

Dunno what you mean about working 24 hours. They were long days to get the work done but hardly 24 hours.

No I would not. Don't go there.

The boss who expects to work in that environment - would he work there himself?

        Forget it.

Why is there no downtime on these jobs?

If I'm working 24 hours, then that's between two and three times a normal day, so adjust accoridingly and they'll soon find someone else who will go (or it won't be as important any more)

Of course, if you want to go, then don't adjust at all and have fun.

                  Depends.

Are you talking about working on an Afghan military base where you get helicoptered in and out and work 6 weeks on, 2 weeks off with no options to leave the base during those 6 weeks.
Or is it a case of working somewhere where you stand a strong chance of being arrested for drinking in public.
                  Or is it something else?
…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore
