Underpaid in one role - does it hurt your next role?

    Hi all

My previous post outlines my dilemma with my current contract.

I am now looking for other opportunities. However, I am worried that recruiters / companies find it odd that I was paid that little? In a sense, would they think I did a lesser job and how best can I get around that?

    Thanks for all the assistance

Uh, why are you telling recruiters your rate?

Surely you have to tell them at some point?

          Errrrr no...

You tell them the rate you want for the new role. The rate for any previous role is none of their business!

They will always ask - cos obviously if they know you have previously signed on for peanuts they will try to get you to agree to peanuts again.

          Standard contractor responses:
Pimp: What was you last rate?
Con: What is the rate for this role?
Pimp: What rate will you accept?
Con: What rate is on offer for this role?
Pimp: What is your bottom line?
Con: What is the rate for this role?
          etc etc
Pimp: They haven't set a rate/They are offering "market rate"/They re open on this/They are seeing what response they get....
Con: If they haven't set a rate there can't be a real role/Budget for this role/Call me back when they are serious...

Sorry, by "tell them your rate" I did mean your desired/realistic one

Tell them it depends on the exact location and specifics of the contract (technologies, conditions etc.) and bounce it back to them by asking what range they are offering.

                  WMUNS.

I might be prepared to take a lower rate if it was close to home and in the summer (lower rate usually means a junior position). But that's not something the agent needs to know.

Exactly. I saw a much more junior role in my hometown the other day - no real commuting/staying away would mean actually only a tiny hit in my takehome so I was a bit tempted. Problem is, I don't think I could handle not running the show now.
