Left - client requesting personal laptop audit

Not sure whether to post this in Legal instead.

3 renewals at client (many many months), last 2 weeks of contract left and stress got too much (external issues plus internal harassment) and I've left (signed off, stress) - had enough. Client wants access to personal laptop to make sure I don't have company material on it. Only material I had was a) transferred off and b) consisted of graphics (no data).

Where do I stand if they withhold payment, or insist on me bringing my laptop in? I've no intention of going back there again, ever.

Through an umbrella, if it makes a difference.

Back it up, wipe it, install Windows 3.11, let them have their fun, restore it...

I've got Windows 3.11 in a VM on this rMBP for a laugh, it's like lightening despite the absence of any VMware tools!

          Sounds pretty ridiculous indeed.
As they have no contract with you at the moment, under which agreement are they asking you to do this work?
I'd probably loan them the laptop for 1 day (pre-paid) and charge £1k for every day that they want to keep it.
Could be a nice a little, passive earner.

Needless to say, there's good tools to do a secure wipe - 5-7 time overwriting 1 and 0s and then you restore your system and documents etc..

I suppose the current contract (end of this month) is still in force - or maybe not - as I'm signed off. They could use that?

Only if it sets it out in the contract. So, what does it say?

You as an employee is not who the contract is with so being 'signed-off' is irrelevant.
