Want a contract but don't want to leave perm job for good

So I've gotten comfortable in my permie job, but the money can't support my jet-setting lifestyle.
I already have an offer for a contract role, but not sure what to do with the perm role.
I really like it, and other than money it's very good for work/life stuff and doing interesting things.

Has anyone ever agreed a sabbatical, where you leave your perm job, do some contract work and return to the perm stuff?
For the perm business this should still be better than trying to find someone else, upskill them, get them up to speed etc.

Alternatively, should I just ask for a sabbatical and not go into too much detail?

Laugh my tits off if you agreed an unpaid sabbatical and then the contract dried up.

            This is gold dust.

Would you be working for a competitor?
