    Advice for permie considering contracting

    Hi all,

I'm an Irish resident considering a move to the UK and I was wondering if contracting might be an option.

    Experience:
1 year - Java developer (junior)
6 years - VB6, Sql, Oracle, BI reporting (mid level)
    3.5 years - .Net (C#), WCF, ASP.Net, MVC, jQuery, HTML5, CSS, Angualar.js (senior)

Do I have enough experience to make the jump to contracting and what kind of day rate could I expect?

    Thanks.

How about a bit of basic research first. Check the job boards for roles that are asking exactly the skills you have. Not nearly, or 'could do'. They must be exact to get any chance of a look in. Look at where they are and the rates they are paying an hey presto... You have a better answer than a bunch of strangers can give you. Also look at itjobswatch to compare rates.

Look at your personal finances and work out how long you can survive without work and if you do find one gig how long you can survive without work before you can get a second one. Factor in accomodation etc and Hey presto, more answers...

Time to roll your sleeves up and start doing stuff for yourself I am afraid. You are in charge of your own destiny when contracting so now is the best time to start.

I had already checked out several job sites, rates seem to vary greatly. I could survive for 2 years without work, I wouldn't even be considering a move to contracting otherwise.

I just thought given the wealth of experience on here that someone might be able to share some of that experience and advise based on my experience.

It was a genuine question, jeez.
