It varies, and in unpredictable ways

Usually there will be some tickets that allow you to use any appropriate route on any operator's trains, but other tickets (usually pre-booked ones) that constrain you to one operator.

The whole thing tends to be something of a nightmare.

http://nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ has all the timetables for all the different operators, and also has a season ticket calculator - it should work OK even on Win98, I would have thought.

Bizarrely, one of the best sites for finding the times and fares of British trains is the German railways site at http://bahn.de/

Kaspersky went tits up with a Klif BSOD in the middle of my ebay snipe.

Not that it mattered much since the Q meter went for £137... I was only prepared to go to £80.
