I think I'm more impressed by your engineering abilities than the romantic part (which is nice in itself). Hugely nerdy but certainly very cool, and unique.

I don't suppose we can see a picture of it?

He's proposing to her, but I suspect she doesn't like being referred to as 'the German'.

The location is special to her and not just some random faraway island in the North Sea.

In short, christmas day she gets a walnut box that is locked and has a button and lcd screen on the top. Press the button and it tells you the distance to where the box can be opened and the number of attempts (increasing by 1 each time the button is pressed) to 50.

"This is attempt 1 of 50"
                    Distance 451km
                    *Access Denied*
                    Powering Off"

press it again you get "Attempt 2 of 50" etc.
I like this idea. I might actually keep moving the box though to ensure my other half runs out of attempts.

very cool idea . . . but far too much of a faff for me

hope she appreciates it, but in my experience she'll still be moaning at you for the rest of your life,

                      "have you done x y or z?"

"no you can't go on holiday with your mates"

"we're spending xmas at my parents" etc etc

"when's the last time you did anything nice for me"

                      you'll bring up the proposal, she'll respond wth . . .

"that was years ago, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY!"

                      But

                      best of luck eh
