Yeah, woolies is a victim of britishness, both losing their identity.

I like woolies. A place I can walk past safe in the knowledge there's absolutely nothing inside I'd want to buy.

I bet Alan Sugar is regretting that major stake in Woollies that he bought only a few weeks ago.

Can't have been that major, they were 'selling' it off for a quid. Yet the public still preferred to go across the road the the pound shop.

Apparently the broken that sold him "shares" could not deliver them so that transaction basically did not happen... looks like someone was selling non-existant shares and got away with it

As someone who is used to small-town life, I like WW. Has all kinds of stuff and during my student days they did a great "5 chocolate bars for £1" deal.

However even as a student I would buy most stuff off the net... hard to keep a chain open just for pic'n'mix...

You could move in to a totally different market with a name like that

In the good old days Woolies had lots of open trays where you could buy screws and similar really low cost things individually. It was really exciting in them days. All the joy went out of life once they started packaging things in tens.

Can't really see that happening. Firstly they're still selling things that people want to buy, and secondly they're owned by a multi-billion pound private equity fund that's not going to let its investment collapse without a fight.
