Default Any bike riders?

Any bike riders here?
what do you ride? how long you had your license?

Doing my CBT then my DAS, thinking about getting a 250cc to start off with maybe an aprilia rs250 or the ninja250 - any thoughts?

Get proper leathers (or synthetic alternative) and always wear them. I crashed my first bike at a modeest 30mph and was wearing denims and lost most of the skin off my knee. Wasn't so much gravel rash as "oh there's your bones"

Riding for years.
KTM Duke II (its getting old but its fun).

Dont understand why a 250? They are specialist machines and cost more for what they are.
You would be as well with an entry level 600 like a bandit or a hornet which will keep their resale value. Even a sports bike if you trust your ability to use it.

Hullo,

I've had my licence 5 years - had a couple of SV 650's - an ideal first bike.

Bikeless at the moment though due to the credit crunch (not really but it's a different spin on things).

Further to the previous poster - get a decent lid that fits you properly - try loads on. And a quiet one as it's much less distracting on the bike.

i may be wrong in thinking this, id rather learn how to ride a bike properly ( as ive never riden before ) on something small that i wont go and kill myslef on. I think a 500 or a 600 will have too much power for a beginner - also im 5'8 and the 250's are a great size for that.

I passed my test in 1991 and I used to ride a CBR600 before I moved overseas and sold it! I loved it.

I took (and passed) my IAM test and also became an instructor. I used to teach CBT on a sunday morning and then a group of us would go off for a ride.

The IAM group was a lot of fun too - single commonality point between people from all backgrounds. We would think nothing of going for a 200-300 mile ride on a sunday afternoon. Lots of overtaking, max (legal - honest officer) speed, country lanes, etc etc!!

I was part of a bike group set up by the local road safety group. Members there included some Police motorcyclists. They were the most fun to have in the group on a ride....! For some reason, on those rides, we never encountered any speed traps, other traffice cops or pass any cameras! Strnage huh?!

Now a wife and 2 kids later I am "restricted" to the Mustang! It's a convertable but not the same as riding a bike!

An R6 is a nice beginners bike. They are tiny too so you will be a good size for it. I'm 6'4. My 2000 ninja was good as a starter bike but was bigger than current 600's and it only had 100bhp. Current R6's have about 130bhp. You could get an older 1 as a learning tool though. Less power and you wont be so pi55ed of if/when it goes down the road without you.

If you dont want a supersports bike, you could get an SV or hornet as previously said. They similar engines to the supersport counterparts but arent as tuned up. You dont really want to be doing more than around 80mph without proper fairing anyway.
