The mrs went vegan a couple of months back which has made me 90% vegan as it's too much hassle to cook two dinners. There are some really good alternatives now - for example sainsburys do a mince which is really juicy and makes for a better chilli con(sin?) carne than beef mince. the key really is to avoid looking for meat alternatives and explore cuisine which never had meat in it - most traditional thai and indian food is vegan as they didn't have the refrigeration for meat and dairy. as for vitamins most of the soy/almond/coconut milk alternatives are vitamin and calcium enriched. it's really not that hard. at some point (brexit?) the subsidies will disappear and the cost of meat and dairy will force hoi polloi to look at alternatives which is good news for the environment.

still nothing comes close to proper bacon though

The majority of hot countries in the developing world don't have refrigeration but still eat meat, plus India has a large vitamin B12 and iron deficiency problem.

Also the amount of vitamins and minerals in the alternatives is lower than in meat and dairy.

Speaking as an ex-vegan turned lacto-ovo-vegetarian, make sure you both take a daily multi-vitamin (especially B12) + iron, possibly calcium. Ignore any vegan propaganda that this is unnecessary - it's very hard to achieve without supplements.

Indian (and Middle Eastern - falafel + hummus) is the way to go.

Worst thing about being vegan: other vegans. Best thing about being vegan: winding up other vegans and then revealing that you are vegan.

Indeed. Seeing as the bacon/gammon flavour is from the curing process it only takes a determined scientist to genetically modify a plant to taste the same.

So how to motivate the scientists to solve that problem? Rasher their bacon.

The scientist who figures this out will really be bringing home the bacon

It's why the frazzle and hummus sandwich is a vegan classic.

If only the eggplant tasted of egg there'd be real options.

Chopped cooked pasta and mashed chickpea in vegan mayo with salt and black pepper makes a surprisingly good egg mayo substitute.

Anyway, in terms of eggplant / aubergine, berenjenas fritas with miel de caña is where it is at.

Rubbish. It takes 10X the amount of land to produce weight for weight the same nutrients as meat. Our Nation which is currently 60% self sufficient in food would die of malnutrition before any perceived eco benefits would show. This of course may be the eco-warrior plan ...
