    More Brexit doom

This is more about Japan trying to leverage its weight to get the UK to stay in the single market.

Japan wants to hold early free trade talks with Britain, in a sign of growing concern among the country’s businesses over post-Brexit access to the European market.

Japan’s prime minister, Shinzo Abe, is hoping to soften the blow that Britain’s expected withdrawal from the single market could inflict on Japanese companies by starting informal talks on free trade before Britain leaves the EU, the Nikkei business newspaper said, citing unnamed sources.
What it doesn't sound like is opening up Japan to Japanese companies operating in Britain so that Japanese companies already in Japan can export to Japan from the UK.

Interesting that Japan sees Britain staying in the Single Market as more desirable than having a trade deal with the UK.

Rolls said it had also committed to safeguarding 7,000 jobs after talks with trade unions, pledging that there will be no compulsory redundancies in the East Midlands region for five years.
Rolls employs around 12,000 staff in the East Midlands, of whom 7,000 are covered by the union agreement.
So 5000 are ready for the chopping block, something has got to give after results like this:

The group reported its largest ever loss and one of the biggest in UK corporate history earlier this year, slumping into the red with a pre-tax loss of £4.64 billion for 2016 after a £4.4 billion writedown caused by the collapse of the pound since the Brexit vote, as well as a £671 million penalty to settle bribery allegations.
