A key principle of the UK constitution, and plain common sense really, is that Parliament cannot bind its successors.
On that basis there wouldn't have to be elections. If there can be a rule that says there needs to be an election every 5 years, then surely there can be a rule that says there shouldn't be early elections.

The point was to stop governments doing this; effectively fixing the election by only having elections when they're most likely to win/the opposition have voted for a total numptie who nobody would vote for. And it's not completely unenforceable; in fact it is being enforced: they're having a vote and they need 2/3rds.

Yep. A short sharp shock to remind the populace why they must keep Labour out of power for all time.

What do you care? You don't have a vote, and even if you did, the Mental health Act would come into play.

Yes, I read about that after posting.

But wouldn't any MP who voted against a fresh election risk completely undermining their credibility?

You'd hope that from time to time MPs might consider what's in the best interests of the country... It'll be interesting to see how many do oppose it. Labour MPs with narrow majorities are the obvious ones, but Tory back benchers might not want it either as in effect a larger majority reduces their influence.

In her speech May was playing the populist card (no arguing with success) by trying to present herself as the champion of the people against the oppressors. So really she was setting up Corbyn to dare oppose it. Perhaps she's been taking notes from Sturgeon.

Oddly enough that's almost as long as you have been complaining about this country. We have elections, that's sort of the way we do things. I'm sure things were so much better in Stalin's day...

Got the right to it now, innit?

Stalin was worse. The reason this country is a lot better is because people did not keep their mouth shut when criticizing the Govt, it's totally essential to democracy to keep the scumbags in Govt on their toes.
